However, as we age, the quality of the proteins in the new cells is lower. The result is that this leads to the new stem cells losing their ability to divide, i.e. to proliferate.

ReactivationJessberger and his team found that a protein called lamin B1 plays a very important role in this process. This protein decreases with age and would be one of those responsible for the stem cell proliferation process not being able to follow its normal course.
What the researchers did was to artificially increase the levels of lamin B1 in the brains of aged mice. The result was that stem cell division was enhanced and, therefore, new neurons were produced.
The scientists were also able to identify a very particular molecule: sFRP5. They found that it interfered with the proliferation of stem cells in the brain and contributed to keeping them inactive. By neutralizing the action of this molecule, they were able to reactivate stem cell function.
All this was achieved thanks to the application of a mathematical model. The question guiding the research was why so many stem cells remain dormant in the brains of aged mice.
The projection into the futureAlthough the study was carried out in mice and is still preliminary research, the results are very encouraging.
