.
"Have the courage to do what your heart and intuition say. They already know, in some way, what you really want to become."
-Steve Jobs
What is intuition? Intuition can be defined in many ways: the ability to understand things instantly without using logic, the ability to make quick decisions unconsciously, and so on.
Every day, throughout our lives, we continuously make decisions. Social psychology, until 10 years ago, held that decision making had to be done consciously and logically.
To do this, it was suggested that we draw up long lists of arguments for and against each decision, so that we could make the best decision.
Today, we are already certain that decisions made instinctively are valid, even more so than decisions made logically and rationally.
Throughout each day, we make decisions instinctively and quickly, without carrying out complex logical or mathematical processes to choose. We take one road to go to one destination instead of another, we buy one magazine instead of another and so on.
If we had to rationally analyze all the decisions we make throughout the day, it would be chaos. We would never get to anything on time and it would take us hours to decide anything.
Intuition is defined as a feeling or sensation that occurs very quickly in the mind, the reasons for which we do not know, but which drives us to decide and act. Therefore, intuition usually manifests itself with emotions and physical sensations.
If we want to make a decision, it is advisable to focus on what we feel, what physical impact one decision or another produces on us.
Do you feel good, do you feel uncomfortable, do you feel happy, what does each decision make you feel if you think about it?
Sometimes it is good to ignore some of the information we have to decide, and use little information to be faster in making effective decisions.
Daniel Kahneman, Nobel laureate in economics, argues in his book "Think fast, think slow", that we have two ways of thinking:
- System 1, which is fast, intuitive and emotional thinking.
- System 2, which is slower, requires more effort and is more rational and logical.
The first system provides quick decisions and the second system provides conscious decisions, but on many occasions, we do not know which of the two systems we have used to make a decision.
How do we decide?
"We prove by logic, but we discover by intuition."
-Henri PoincarГ©
The process of deciding correctly does not require us to evaluate a large number of options, but to choose what we need.
Our choices are related to a series of general processes and rules that our brain has learned. We simply have to choose the right rule for the moment.
For example, if we look at the way we fall in love and think about it rationally, we should draw up a list of all the options, i.e. detail each of the women or men, the pros and cons for each case and the consequences for us. Then we should calculate the probability that what we want to happen will happen.
Freud argued that: "When we make small decisions, it is always advantageous to analyze the pros and cons. However, in vital matters, such as the choice of a partner or a career, the decision must come from the unconscious, from a hidden place within us. In the really important decisions of life, we must let the deep needs of our nature rule.
The reality is that we fall in love based on our instinct, our intuition.
"In the sea, as in love, it is often better to follow a hunch than to obey it.
to follow a hunch than to obey a library."
-John R. Hale
At other times, psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer argues, we make decisions based on what we know. For example, we choose to buy a book because it has been recommended to us or we answer a question with an answer because the answer rings a bell.
Intuitive intelligenceThus, based on the above, it can be said that we possess intuitive intelligence.
This term was used by the Canadian sociologist Malcolm Gladwell, who argues that we have an ability to determine what is most important in a short time, and he called this ability intuitive intelligence.
The problem today is that we receive too much information that prevents us from making a quick decision, so it is considered better not to have many options in order to make better and more effective decisions.
In reality, it is not about reasoning, but about listening to our subconscious and our emotions.
Intuitive intelligence has a number of brakes, for example:
- Too much information.
- Stress.
- Prejudices.
All these brakes should be overcome in order to properly develop our intuitive intelligence, so that we are able to make decisions in less time, more effectively and with less information.
"Intuition is a spiritual faculty, and does not explain,
simply shows the way."
